Project Background
Our client was grieving the loss of their spouse and child, both of whom were lost in an accident, when they received a message from the dead spouses’ phone number (the actual phone was destroyed in the accident). The message stated that if our client did not pay over $500,000, their remaining children and grandchildren would be killed. The criminals then proceeded to take over the phone number of our client, the email accounts of our client, the dead spouse, and the dead child, as well as some financial accounts.
Project Tasks
We were responsible for retaking control of the phone numbers and all accounts that were coopted by the hackers. We were responsible for drafting and executing a strategy to defend our client. We were also tasked with discovering who the hackers were and if they were in a jurisdiction in which they could be arrested.
Project Outcomes
- We drafted a comprehensive strategy to retake our clients’ cell phone account, phone numbers, email accounts, financial accounts.
- We collected access logs for the mobile provider and email accounts and analyzed them to determine if the hackers could be located.
- After the execution of the strategy, the client was not contacted by the criminals again and all accounts were successfully retaken.
- We discovered the IP addresses of the attackers in the log files, showing that they were in the United States.
- We acted as liaisons to law enforcement detectives and district attorneys, providing them the crucial information necessary to arrest and successfully prosecute the criminals.
