The Employee Polygraph Protection Act of 1988 (EPPA) was enacted to establish guidelines for polygraph testing and imposed restrictions on most private employers. Pre-employment tests of applicants is generally restricted. However, if you experience a specific business loss, you may be able to conduct polygraph tests on your employees, but these tests fall under the guidelines of EPPA.
A polygraph examination measures and records multiple physiological indicators simultaneously — including respiratory rate, cardiovascular activity, and electrodermal response — while the examinee is asked a structured series of questions.
